Governor DeSantis is proposing eliminating property taxes on homestead homes in Florida. Florida legislators have proposed several measures to reduce property tax burdens in 2026. Florida is experiencing a property tax revolt, not unlike that which led to the Save Our Homes Amendment in 1992. That amendment capped the increase in taxable value of homestead homes at 3% per year or the increase in the consumer price index, whichever is less.
The new tax revolt in Florida is much like the first tax revolt launched in 1992. Inflationary increases in property values and property taxes are again taxing citizens from their homes and eliminating the dream of home ownership for younger generations. State and local governments are using the windfall from increased tax revenues to boost government spending.
